Welcome, Ben Moudry!

image 6Hello, my name is Benedict Moudry and I am incredibly excited to be the new principal of Lake Country School. My excitement stems from my personal history with LCS and with my belief it is one of the premier Montessori schools in the country and a top school in Minnesota. It is an excellent school because it has a culture that values human potential, focuses on a developmental process and believes children learn naturally.

My personal connections with LCS weave throughout most of its history and from the perspective of each of the different stakeholder groups. My first connection to LCS came when I was seven years old and attended LCS as a new second grader. I was in Class E in E1 and Class H in E2. When I attended the Junior High in 7th grade we had classes in the Hiawatha Leadership Academy building (formerly Incarnation School) and during my 8th grade year we started using the newly built classrooms above the gym. During college, I found myself remembering many of my experiences at LCS and drawing upon them. I began to see the depth and quality of a Lake Country education because many of the seeds sown in me during my time at LCS were germinating. This is when I began to focus on the idea of becoming an educator.  Therefore, after college I contacted LCS and was hired to do all sorts of jobs to support the faculty throughout the school. This is when I learned what it was like to be a faculty member at LCS.  Most recently, the connection was as a parent. My wife, Michelle, and I enrolled our three children in LCS from 2010-2014. We were thrilled to be able to send our children to LCS and truly valued being a part of the strong and supportive community of parents.

When I was hired as the principal of The Grove School, a Montessori school for adolescents in Redlands, California, we were all quite sad to leave the LCS community. Although we left being a part of the LCS community every day, we still kept track of what was happening at LCS and our children came back to visit a few times over the past five years.

During my time as principal of The Grove School, I learned more about the work of leading and serving a school community. Due to this experience, I see now more than ever why I love the work. I have always enjoyed working with and supporting young people, but now I realize I enjoy working with and supporting adults who are invested in the growth and development of young people, both teachers and parents. To me the work of a principal is leading through communication (mostly listening) and guiding all stakeholders to connect their individual needs and work to maintain the mission and vision of the school for the benefit of all. It is being of service to a community and working to evolve the school toward ongoing improvement.

While I was away from the Twin Cities, I continued to keep track of Lake Country School, paying close attention to when Paulette ZoĆ« might retire. I did this because I have always loved LCS and was excited at the possibility of supporting the school as its principal. My sustained interest and strong feelings for LCS come from my positive experience as a student, staff member, and parent. To me LCS is an outstanding school, not only because of its enriching, holistic, and child-centered education, but also because it invests in building its community for the benefit of all.  This is why I wanted to be a part of LCS again, and why my wife and I wanted our children to return to LCS. We wanted them to experience the sincere, heartfelt, and compassionate community that cares deeply about children and empowers them to discover their broad capabilities, find their passions, and have many seeds sown to enrich their lives.

In my first year as principal, in addition to ensuring the school functions smoothly in its day to day operations and delivery of high quality education, my responsibility is threefold: 1) complete a comprehensive assessment of the school through observation, listening, and analysis; 2) continue to make progress on the strategic plans as set forth by the board; and 3) engage with all of the families in the school and begin to develop meaningful connections with each of them.

I am excited to get to know all of the children, current and alumni families, staff and faculty, and community partners that make up the LCS community. It is an honor and privilege to be the principal of Lake Country School. I look forward to meeting you this fall.
