Lake Country School’s Upcoming Renovation

Perspective View - Exterior Play Place

On Thursday, April 30, the Board of Trustees voted to postpone the start of the building construction. Several factors were considered, most notably the uncertainty of what might happen next year with the COVID-19 virus in terms of school closures and the financial burden that may be experienced by members of our community and by the school itself. Our first priority is maintaining the financial stability of the school so that we can pay our staff, continue to provide tuition assistance, and maintain continuity in education. To that end, we have worked with Ben Moudry in evaluating the school’s budget for the 2020-2021 school year and have determined that it would not be financially prudent to go forward at this time.

In addition to finances, we also considered the construction timeline. In March, the City of Minneapolis required a site survey, and, recently, the city added a requirement for a public review meeting. With these unexpected requirements, the 2020 start date would be on July 1. This late date brings completion further into winter than anticipated, which would create more disruption to the school year and learning. We felt that it was unwise to move forward with the construction project this year due to the disarray that comes with construction and how it would exacerbate the difficulties that may arise due to COVID-19.

All of the pieces of the project are prepared and will be reviewed by the board in November 2020 with an eye toward breaking ground in spring of 2021. We are confident that this is the right decision for the LCS community at this time.

We would also like to take this opportunity to assure everyone that the Board is working closely with the LCS staff on COVID-19 matters as it relates to the short- and long-term financial health of the school. If you have any questions about the project or the Board’s decision to postpone, please contact Robyn Bruggeman at Robynolah@aol.com.

Previous Updates:

Lake Country School’s Board of Trustees is thrilled to announce that our Facilities Master Plan is moving forward into construction. In 2015, LCS began an audit of the current facilities and progressed to a full Facilities Master Plan to address the current and future needs for the LCS learning environments. The Facilities Master Plan includes multiple phases that will improve our facility over the next 20+ years. Knutson Construction has been hired with confidence and is set to begin construction in Spring 2020. The project will be completed in Fall 2020.

This renovation will start with the decommissioning of the current front entrance and stairwell to make room for additional program, meeting, and gathering space for the LCS community. There will be an addition to the front of the building that will provide a welcoming and more secure entrance, a third-floor industrial technology design lab, a staff room, offices, a student health area, a reconfigured cafeteria, new elevator, and more.

The project expands the support of current programming and administrative areas. Once the project is complete, there will be no change in enrollment or permanent impact to our parking lot space.

Please visit lcsconstruction.org in the coming weeks. Information will be posted soon, including weekly project updates and a construction calendar, as well as general details about the project. All are welcome to stop by LCS during the month of March for one last look before Knutson Construction begins. We’d like to thank all our neighbors for their continued support and understanding as we begin these exciting developments for our school.
